Dinnertime and Meal Planning as a Family of Four with Effortless Chic

The first year with an infant is a crash course in transitions. Everything from sleeping and feeding to their physical movements and development are constantly changing. One thing that was really hard for me to get a handle on in the beginning was dinner time, but at 10 months old now, it feels like we have finally found our rhythm.  I love the idea of a meal plan, but honestly it doesn’t work for us in this season of life.  What does work for us is more of a capsule pantry approach. Having a well-stocked pantry, a refrigerator full of a handful of staples, and essential cooking tools that work for a myriad of meals means dinner is always just thirty minutes away. (more…)

Plan a Better Backyard Barbecue for Kids

After a long winter and wet spring, we’re doing a bit of celebrating here in Seattle as backyard barbecue season is in full swing! While many houses right in the city have relatively small yards, we make the best of our little patio with a simple grill, a sandbox for our son, a comfy outdoor couch, and string lights to tie the whole thing together. Before we had a rambunctious toddler, eating outdoors was a casual all-night affair, but now of course things are abbreviated and it takes a bit more intention and planning to pull things off successfully. Here’s what makes for a better barbecue and a good time for all in our house:

Homemade Snacks for Tots, Made Better

Before we had our son, I used to make homemade bread, yogurt, salad dressings and even ice cream. But let’s be real: those days are gone (for now, anyway). While I love to cook and make most of our meals, there’s just not enough time in the week to prepare fresh yogurt and bread. But as anyone with a toddler knows, snacks are a pretty big deal and a few months ago I started to feel guilty about relying on prepackaged snacks as much as we were.
